The STEAMy Poetry of Ocean Science
Dr. Marjorie Wonham is a Canadian marine biologist who integrates research and teaching at Friday Harbor Laboratories. In this event she will share STEAMy (STEM + Arts) – and occasionally steamy – contemporary poems that combine marine organisms, science, and reflections on life. The poems are selected from her growing anthology collection of marine-science poems from around the world, destined eventually to become a book. This interdisciplinary mashup of marine science and poetry integrates Mar’s primary interests in marine invertebrate zoology and creative teaching. (Whale lovers: There will also be some poems about marine vertebrates!) Anyone who wishes to will have a chance to create their own marine-science found poem from sources that will be provided, so bring a pen or pencil.
